Cat and Dog at Peace

Home / Stories / Cat and Dog at Peace

Cat and dog had been long time friends and brothers. But the struggle for superiority and domination marred their relationship. They both hated each other. Whenever cat saw dog, it picked up a fight against it and vice-versa. They couldn’t sit on the same seat in the council of Domestic animals (CDA). Dog and cat had their differences. They quarreled over who controlled the domestic space. Dog thought it should get all the praises for its hunting talent and for keeping its masters compound safe from the unseen, while cat thought it should receive more praises for chasing other members of the domestic family from destroying its master’s belongings. They also quarreled over who owned what part of the land. Dog felt that it had a big skin and should dominate over the cat. The cat thought it had been under the oppression of the dog for a long time and needed its freedom. The cat would crawl at the dog while the dog would bark at the cat on each occasion. This conflict continued right down to the children of both members of the domestic family. As they continued to fight, other members of the domestic family began to take advantage of it. Even the fowl which was considered a very week member of the council could then pride itself as a star.

The fight between cat and dog lasted for decades. The International Association of Domestic Animals (IADA) tried but failed to bring a lasting solution. The two rivals were already getting fed up with the tension but no one could summit to another because of their ego. Their ego could even allow them burry their kittens and puppies.
One day dog took the responsible to invite cat to its cage. At first cat was skeptical, it carried along its venom and even told its friends to be on guard in case dog had any evil plan. The day was set. Some members of the CDA were not happy getting this news.

Finally cat and dog met to seek a lasting solution to their problem ‘themselves’. At the end of the day cat and dog realized their problem was not even power but issues of respect. Cat wanted its rights to be respected and its kittens to also have smiling faces like puppies. Dog realized it had not done justice to cat and so could not have expected peace between them in the CDA. All the members of CDA were surprised to see two arch enemies become friends again. Dog and cat lived happily ever after.

Reflection: Whatever this means to you, always believe that peace is possible. While we fight against each other, they are others who celebrated because they benefit from it. If dog and cat can unite, what more of us with a superior reasoning faculty? Let’s extend love to each other, forgive others and never fine delight in hatred and evil even under the sun. You can be the dog who will invite a cat for dialogue. You can also be the cat who will accept invitation to the table of dialogue and understanding.
